HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTE DEVELOPMENT


The Institute for sugar beet of the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences was founded in 1922. It was one of the first, after the revolution, large agricultural scientific institutions, created for studying scientific and practical problems of breeding.
According to the direction of scientific–research work and affiliation of the institute, it changed its title, such as:

- 1922-1930 – NIS (Scientific Institute for Breeding)

- 1930-1934 – UNIS (Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute for sugar industry;

- 1934-1945 – VNDITSP (all – Union Scientific-Research Institute of Sugar Beet;

- 1992 – till now – ITSB (Institute for Sugar Beet).

The first steps of organization and development of the Institute were headed and directed by Chief of the Seed-Breeding Department A.K. Zaporohzets, widely known scientists Prof. V.V. Kolkunov, who was the first Director of the Institute, academician E.F. Votchal, Prof. M.K. Malushyts’kiy, Prof. O.O. Tabent’kiy, Prof. G.A. Zevyts’kiy, Scientific Secretary of the Scientific Agrarian Committee of Ukraine P.Ye. Yaroshevs’kiy.
From the time of its foundation the Institute has become a leading scientific- research centre in the branch of sugar beet production.
Scientific activity of many outstanding scientists was connected with the Institute and its network at different times: academicians E.F. Votchal, A.I. Dushechkin, O.I. Oparin, I.V. Yakushkin, I.F. The Institute was headed by V.V. Kokunov, M.M. Panasiuk, A.S. Mishchenko, I.F. Buzanov, V.F. Zubenko and from 1993 – by M.V. Roik.
To mark great success achieved in development and introduction into practice of high-productive sugar beet varieties and modern technology of their mechanized production, the Institute was awarded with the highest state award of the time – Order of Lenin – in 1971.
